Announcing Files v4.2.20

Thumbnail

Today we are releasing Files Preview v4.2.20 for users of the preview version.

An update icon should be displayed in the top right corner of the app for existing users, while new users can get started from our download page. Additionally, you can help support the project by purchasing Files on the Microsoft Store or by sponsoring us on GitHub. Your support is greatly appreciated but entirely optional.

What’s New in Files v4.2.20

Faster thumbnails and icons

Continuing the performance work from the previous build, thumbnails and icons now load faster and no longer briefly flash when opening a folder.

Improved scrolling performance

Scrolling through large folders is now smoother and more responsive.

More reliable Git operations

We improved error handling so that when a Git operation fails, the actual error message is shown instead of a generic timeout message.

Natural sorting in the sidebar

Folders in the sidebar and breadcrumb Omnibar are now sorted naturally, so folders like “Folder 2” appear before “Folder 10”.

Fixes

  • Improved privacy by masking the username and file paths in log files.

Conclusion

As always, we appreciate your feedback and suggestions on how to improve Files. You can reach us on Discord and on GitHub.

Thank you for using Files! 😊
